¡Escuela!

Moikka!

Tää on huono sillä mun pitää aina vastata.

Onneks vaan suomalaiset tajuu ton.

Koulupäivät on täällä 8.30-13.30, eli suomeen verrattuna aika lyhyet. Perjantai on ainoa poikkeus (8.30-14.30.). Mun yks kaveri täällä on enkunopettajan poika (äiti puoliks amerikkalainen ja puoliks ranskalainen) ja se lainas mulle tosi monen eri sitcomin tuotankokausii. Täällä kuulee niin vähän englantii että iltasin yleensä katon aina sitcomeja enkuksi espanjankielisillä teksteillä. The Big Bang Theory on tällä hetkellä vika asia minkä nään ennenku nukahan.

(Jälkiruuat on täällä tosi hyviä)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi! The school has officially started and I can honestly say that I don’t understand anything from the teaching. I mean I understand little things but the big pictures just go over my head. The teacher of economy said that I shouldn’t stress, the grades I get here don’t affect my studies in Finland at all. She also said after class that my first priority is to learn Spanish and after that concentrate on the actual subjects. The teachers here are really nice and helpful. Everyone is so eager to help me for example my IT-teacher comes to ask me all the time if I understood or should she speak more slowly etc. Only one teacher speaks with the local accent and that’s (of course) my math’s teacher. It doesn’t really matter though, math is for the most part numbers so it’s ok.

Today was one of the weirdest Spanish classes I’ve ever had. The first class in the morning was Spanish and I went to the class normally and sat down. When I looked at the blackboard the teacher had wrote ‘’Kalevala’’ and at first I thought I was just so tired so I read again and turns out I wasn’t. After writing Kalevala he draw a map of Finland and wrote ‘’Finlandia’’. Then he took a book from his bag and it was (surprise surprise) Kalevala. After that he walked over to me and said that he really likes Kalevala and he would like me to tell about it to the class. I felt like that was the moment that the Finnish education system had been preparing me for for my whole life. Well, I told them about Kalevala and how it was created. After that we discussed what cultural impact it has had (The lord of the rings for example). It was a pretty funny class. After we had gone through Kalevala we talked about the pronunciation and construction of the Finnish language. He was especially interested in the alphabets and the words. I was asked how one says ‘’Profesor’’ in Finnish and I said ‘’Professori’’. After that the class repeated that word and it’s really weird, they pronounce Finnish almost perfectly. The only thing that causes difficulties is ä and ö (Elias Lönnrot is for example Elias Lonnrot). Otherwise it’s really simple for them cause the pronunciation is so similar.

Although I don’t understand the teaching the school is still nice. My classmates try to help as much as they can (Even though no one speaks English) and the teachers too. I've promised to a lot of students to tutor them in English. Even though they don't speak much English here they are still very motivated to learn. When I walk on the hallways during recess people shout ‘’Jaakko’’ or ‘’Finlandia’’ and I never remember they’re names. Based on my own experience here half of the male population is called ‘’Nacho’’ so if I don’t remember someone’s name, ‘’Nacho’’ is the name I go with.

The only thing I find frustrating/slightly funny is the way they pronounce my last name. In the beginning of every class there is a roll call and 99% of the time the teacher says ‘’Jaakko Turha’’. For those who don’t understand Finnish, Turha means useless. They say it like that because J=H. My first name is easy for them but my surname isn’t.

The schooldays are from 8.30 to 13.30 which compared to Finland are pretty short. Friday is the only exception (8.30-14.30). One of my friends here is a son of an English teacher (The mom is half American half French) and he lent me many sitcoms. One hears so little English here so at night I usually watch sitcoms with Spanish subtitles. The Big Bang Theory is currently the last thing I see before falling asleep. But now we’re going swimming so hasta luego!
